Weyerhaeuser has developed manufacturing technologies that allow us get the most out of each log. Maximizing resources is one way to minimize our impact on the environment. We're also constantly working to improve the environmental performance of our manufacturing facilities. As we continue to improve efficiencies, decrease emissions and make better use of natural resources, we are reducing our environmental footprint.
Environmental Footprint of Our Manufacturing Facilities
RESOURCE EFFICIENCY
On average, we use 99% of each log to produce Weyerhaeuser and Weyerhaeuser wood products, additional wood
products, and energy. And our engineered wood products are made using advance technologies that allow us to
take wood fiber from trees less suitable for structural lumber and efficiently turn them into strong, predictable
building materials.
In our lumber mills:
- We utilize the latest computer-assisted grading, process control, and efficient manufacturing practices to provide superior products.
- Our cutting-edge manufacturing techniques optimize each log and piece of lumber-dramatically reducing waste.
In our engineered wood products mills:
- We've invested more than four decades of research into developing several patented manufacturing
technologies that allow us to use the wood fiber from trees less suitable for structural lumber and efficiently
turn them into strong, predictable building materials.
CARBON FOOTPRINT
During photosynthesis trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas, from the air and give off oxygen. All of this carbon continues to be stored in the wood after harvesting and overall Weyerhaeuser products store more CO2 than we create. In 2008 the products we manufactured stored the equivalent of 7.7 million metric tons of CO2.
ENERGY USE
We meet more than two-thirds of our operations' energy needs through the use of renewable and carbon-neutral biomass fuels such as wood residuals and other organic byproducts leftover from the manufacturing process. In 2007, biomass fuels provided 69 percent of the energy consumed in our Weyerhaeuser mills. Increasing the use of renewable biomass-based fuels reduces our use of fossil fuels and associated carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. Learn more about our energy use.
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
Weyerhaeuser uses an average of 99 percent of every log in our manufacturing processes. Once a log is milled, the residuals of the milling process are used to make additional products and/or burned to supply energy for our facilities. Learn more about Weyerhaeuser's waste management.
WATER USE AND CONSERVATION
Water used in the production of products is reused in the process or discharged into an approved water treatment facility. Storm water at these facilities is managed according to all federal, state and local regulations. Learn more about our water use.
AIR EMISSIONS
Our air emissions have been steadily declining. Weyerhaeuser has reduced air emissions of volatile organic compounds by 28 percent since 2000. All Weyerhaeuser manufacturing facilities have reduced air emissions of particulate matter per ton of production by 52 percent and nitrogen oxides by 14 percent since 2000. This trend is the result of process modifications and the use of lower-emitting additives as well as pollution-control equipment that has captured or destroyed a significant amount of emissions. Learn more about our our air emissions.
STANDARDS AND CERTIFICATION
Environmental Management Systems For Our Manufacturing Facilities
We've instituted environmental management systems that meet ISO 14001 standards in all of our manufacturing facilities, but the decision to take the additional step of registering those systems with the ISO has been dependent on each facility and the needs of our customers.
Sustainable Forestry Standards
Weyerhaeuser's manufacturing facilities are independently certified to sustainable forestry standards. This means that our products are also certified to sustainable forestry standards and qualify to use the corresponding label.
- Our U.S. manufacturing facilities have been independently certified as meeting the requirements of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) standard.
- Our Canadian manufacturing facilities have been independently certified as meeting the requirements of the Canadian Standards Association's Sustainable Forest Management standard (CSA) or the SFI standard.
